General Information of Phetchabun
Phetchabun is one of the province that has many great natural attractions around its areas. It is about 346 kilometers away from Bangkok. The province itself is situated on the borders of three regions which are the northern, central, and northeast region. As with most province in Thailand, the city of Phetchabun is very close to a river. The Pa Sak river is a magnificent river that cuts through the province which also runs across the western and eastern region of Thailand. This river has a tremendous effect on the fertility of the land here which is why Phetchabun is famous for its agriculture.
How to travel to Phetchabun
To experience the land of Phetchabun, there are various ways you could do just that. The first way is to take a bus from Bangkok, specifically from Mo Chit Terminal or the Northern Bus Terminal. You could also choose to drive here yourself if you would like to as it is the most convenient way of traveling. If you are insisting on using the public transportation, a train is another option available to you. It would roughly take you about four hours to get here and it is also the cheapest option available. Be ready to enjoy the nature while you are here!
Things to do in Phetchabun
As Phetchabun has many famous attractions around the province, visiting them all could take many days assuming that you are going to take a significant amount of time in each of the places. I have compiled a list of places which are really famous and worth checking out.
Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaew
The first place that you should really visit, especially when you are already visiting Thailand, is?Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaew. This is a really magnificent temple with various decorations from different materials such as colored tiles, Benjarong bowls and plates, pearls, rings, glass, and gold. This temple also has a structure imitating the seven levels lotuses which is rare and unique to the eyes.
The lotuses will shine even more when the sun shines upon them as it will give out beautiful reflections. You will be able to see five huge Buddha statues stacked together in this temple as well. If you happen to arrive here in the early morning, you will be welcomed with a sight of the mountains from afar and mists. So, if you want to see every beauty that includes both nature and culture, this is the place for you. From all these qualities mentioned above, this place is considered to be one of the ten Thailand?s Dream Destination which is hand-picked by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
Khao Takien Ngo and Wat Kong Niam
The next place is called Khao Takien Ngo and Wat Kong Niam which are both famous sightseeing spots in this province. You can take pictures of a beautiful sunrise here, including a sea of mists and breathtaking views of the mountains and forests which is the most beautiful view at Khao Khor. It is best if you come here in the rainy season to see a really thick mist.
Wind turbine field
Another landmark in Phetchabun is the wind turbine field which is also located on Khao Khor. This place provides a wide scenery of grass fields and marigold fields. In the winter, you can enjoy picking up strawberries from the local farms as well.
Kaeng Bang Ra Jun Marsh
The last place on the list is Kaeng Bang Ra Jun Marsh. It is a place for environment tourism in which you can take a trip on a boat to see many freshwater jellyfishes. These jellyfishes are one of the rarest creatures on earth and you can only see them once a year around March to April. Other than that, you can indulge yourself in the abundant nature and beautiful butterflies.

Phu Tub Berk
Wat Pha Phu Tub Berk is the highest temple in Thailand in terms of location. It is located up in the hill which has amazing sceneries and mists. The highlight of this place is the Chedi that has an approximate height of more than 80 meters. The Chedi has 37, there is also a Buddha statue that is beautifully decorated. Also, the Chedi is decorated with gemstones, gold, and mosaic tiles and it gives beautiful reflections from the sun that shines on it. If you come here between January and February, along the way to the temple you will see Himalayan cherries.
Phu Tub Berk
If you want to see mountains, Phu Tub Berk is the place to go. This mountain is about 1,768 meters tall which is also the highest point of Phetchabun. There is a tribe living here on the mountain that produces the biggest red cabbage in Thailand and you can see the farms all over the mountain.
When the cabbages are bloom, it is beautiful like giant green flowers, watching them with the mists will gives you another angle in its beauty. There are many places you can choose to stay overnight which will enables you to see the milky way stars when you look up at the sky. In the rainy season between June and October, you will get to see more mists than the winter and you can see them everywhere on the mountain. If you are here in the winter, you will see the wild Himalayan cherries cover the entire forest.
Thung Salaeng Luang
Thung Salaeng Luang National Park is another attraction that you cannot miss. It is also the third biggest national park in Thailand! This place is known as Thailand?s savanna in which the grass fields are surrounded by thick forests. The grass field also change its color depending on the season, green in the rainy season and gold in the winter. If there is a high humidity in the morning, you will see the sea of mists get hit by the first light in the morning which is very beautiful to see. If you want to set up a tent here to relax and live with the nature, feel free to do so. You could also see many species of animals and plants, including a waterfall.
Souvenirs
For souvenirs, the only famous thing you can buy from here is sweet tamarinds. It is highly recommended that you buy it on December or January as the tamarind will be really sweet.
Living in Phetchabun
The motto of Phetchabun is ?Sweet Tamarind City, Nam Nhao National Park, Si Thep Old City, Khao Kho Commemoration, and King Pha Mueang City?. To get around the province, you can use motorcycle taxis, motor trishaws, and the local buses. However, it is best if you have your own vehicle to ride or drive. For accommodation, there are plenty of budget hotels around the province that you can stay in which the price is around 300 to 1000 baht per night.
