This province is pretty famous as the one of the oldest cities in Thailand! It consists of many famous places that you can go and visit. If you want to taste the culture and history of Thailand, this may be the place where you can start doing just that. You can also get here very easily as well!
General Information about Lopburi, Thailand
Lopburi is the second capital of Ayutthaya in the year 1350. However, it was once abandoned in the year 1688 after King Narai passed away. Luckily, the city has been restored to its full glory by King Mongkut or King Rama IV in the year 1864. Apart from its rich history, the city divided itself into two downtown areas which include the new town and the old town. Famous attractions or places are mostly located in the old town.
To get to Lopburi
There are a few ways to get in here. First, you can take the bus to Saraburi and then take the bus from there to here. You can also choose to take a van here as well. Mo Chit is the first place you can look for vans. The third way is to take a train from Hualamphong station which takes around three and a half hours. Obviously, you may prefer to drive yourself here and that is totally fine.
The famous tourist attractions in Lopburi, Thailand
Famous places of Lopburi are crucial for your experiences here at the province. This means that you cannot miss them if you want to really explore the entire province at once. While there are countless spots that are famous to tourists, here are the most famous ones that you should definitely see.
Lopburi is also a special place that plants sunflowers in Thailand and this is the place where most of the flowers are in Thailand too. You can see sunflowers covers the area of more than 200 square kilometers! This is the reason why this place has become a huge tourist attraction in Lopburi. However, the largest field of sunflower is located at Khao Chin Lae with an area of more than 2.24 square kilometers.
If you come here during November to January, you will see the flowers bloom to its maximum capacity with a beautiful background of the mountain. The most suitable time to see them is around 8 to 11 in the morning which the temperature is very nice.
Phra Prang Sam Yod
The second famous place that you cannot miss is Phra Prang Sam Yod. It is an important archaeological site of Lopburi and a tourist attraction. It has the same architectural style as the Sila Lang Castle of Khmer and the structures line up next to each other. The decorations on them are beautiful and you can see a crafted picture of rishi on the doors. It really shows the authenticity of the art from Khmer in Bayon style.
The place is built during the year 1177 to 1230 and there are lots of monkeys living here as well in which there are places for monkeys to find food here. So, you should not give them food outside the designated areas. Be careful with your belongings and safety as well.
Phra Narai Ratchaniwet
This is a Royal Palace that was built in the year 1666 on an area of 41 rai. Then, it was later renovated to become Somdej Phra Narai National Museum in the present day. The outer ring of the place consists of many ancient buildings and the inner ring has architectures that combines the characteristics of both Thai and western. There are many buildings which showcase evidences of ancient artifacts and tools with more than a few centuries old. In fact, there are more than 1,900 pieces on display here!
Local Tells
Unique places of this province that the locals recommended are mostly natural attractions. These places have their own characteristics which I find very interesting and you should definitely go and see them all. However, the following three places are the most exceptional places in my own opinion.
Khao Wong Phra Chan
The first place that is recommended by the local is Khao Wong Phra Chan which is the highest mountain in all of Lopburi. The highest point of this mountain is around 650 meters and there is a temple between the path that leads to the highest point called Wat Khao Wong Phra Chan. This temple has a Buddha statue named Ong Phra Buddha Chok and it is the second biggest Buddha statue of Thailand! Its golden color and the size of 75 meters let you see this statue from a very far distance.
Another highlight of this mountain is the path that goes up the mountain. The 3,790 steps stair is like a proof of love if you have a chance to take your lover here. There are countless spots where you need to cooperate with each other to pass through, but the views on the top is worth it!
Pa Sak Cholasit Dam
Next place on the list is a dam called Pa Sak Cholasit Dam which is the longest earth-fill dam in Thailand. It is built in the year 1994 and there is also the one and only floating railway here in Thailand. It is above the dam with a length of more than 1.5 kilometers. Every weekend during the period of January to February, you can see a train passes through the dam and the passengers can get off the train to cherish the beautiful views. Additionally, you have 30 minutes to go down on the train track, so you can take a picture of the beautiful dam. There are a lot of activities you can participate at the dam such as the tour of the dam, marine life center, and more. If you want to get on the train, I suggest you should carefully check the schedule of the train.
Wang Kan Lueng Waterfall
The last place is called Wang Kan Lueng Waterfall and it is the only waterfall in this province as well. It is a middle-sized waterfall that runs for the entire year with the water that has an emerald-like color. This waterfall is unique because it is created from large underground water sources. This creates a river of more than one kilometer in length which hits the rock near the cliff and creates a waterfall with a width of more than 20 meters. You can go play in the water if you would like to and the vicinity is also chilling with all the trees around there.
