Yasothon is another great province of the northeastern region that every tourist should visit at least once in their lives. It is a place with exotic culture and places beyond believe. No one would every guessed that this province has a lot of unique things, but there are actually quite many things to see here.

General information about Yasothon, Thailand

The province of Yasothon locates in the northeastern region or Esan of Thailand. It also locates directly northeast of the Chi River. A little history about the establishment of this province is that it was once a part of Ubon Ratchathani province, but it was finally separated from that province in the year 1972 by the order of Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn.

This province is also great for rice farming and argriculture in general as its geology enables them to do various things on their land. This is also the province that produces great Jasmine rice with a variety of types. Watermelon is another thing that you might consider buying from here.

To get here,

you can use either a car or a bus. Driving a car here would take you around seven hours and a bus could take a little longer. Have a good trip!

This is the landmark of Yasothon and it is the best first choice of your travel! This place has the biggest frog statue building in Thailand with a height of 19 meters which locates beside a river. The museum tells a local myth of the northeastern region which is about the rocket festival of this region and it involves this frog.

Other than that, you can see various species of frogs from across the globe with more than 500 species. This place also has many goods from agriculture of this province for you to see. You can also visit a giant serpent museum not so far from here as well. For Esan people, serpent is the thing of holiness and in the museum, you can find more about it.

The next place is no other than Wat Phra Phutta Bat Yasothon and it is a temple that locates on the sand hill beside the Chi River with beautiful sceneries. Inside of the temple, there is an important archaeological site which is the white temple with blue roof. The structure incorporates mixed arts in which the fences and terraces both have unique details.

Inside the structure, it contains the highest Buddha statue made with white jade stone in Thailand which has a height of 3.7 meters and a width of 2.31 meters. It also has a chedi with octagonal shape that has three levels inside of it. There are showcases of crafting tools and other utilities of Esan people in the past here. You can also see the Buddha relics, including the crafted Buddha statue in gold color.

Next up is Wat Maha That which is a temple that exists since the beginning of the creation of Yasothon. The important archaeological site is called Phra Kaew Yod Nam Kang. It is a Buddha statue in a meditation attitude and its art style is from the Chiang San era. Its raw material is pure glass in which the width of the statue is 1.9 inches. It is to say that this is the smallest Buddha statue of a city in Thailand.

Another special thing that this place has is the square shaped chedi that looks like Phra That Phanom with a height of 25 meters. The chedi contains the ashes of Phra Anon and it is the only chedi that has his ashes in Thailand. This monk is the one who passed on the knowledge of Buddhism and help this religion to stay till this day.

The first attraction that I am going to show you is Hae Malai Khao Tok Festival. It is the only one hundred years old festival in Thailand and the world! Khao Tok is a kind of rice where they use sticky rice from Sun Pa Tong to slowly cook on low temperature in the pan. Eventually, they will pop into smaller pieces of rice. Once they obtain the popped rice, they make it into accessories called Malai which are very beautiful. They use a lot of popped rice and all of the process are handmade! This place also uses Malai Khao Tok as a souvenir with various sizes and beautiful patterns.

This festival usually happens on Makabucha Day or around the end of February. There are many creators of Malai come here to compete with each other in terms of beauty and they will showcase their work on a parade as well! If you are not available at that time, you can visit Wat Hor Gong instead.

This is the biggest wooden Catholic church in Thailand with dimensions of 16 meters in width and 57 meters in length. It was built with Thai architecture and it exists for almost a hundred years. There are more than 360 varieties of pillars inside the church, but most of them are wooden pillars with mirrors as its decoration. The wooden pillar itself use more than 80,000 wooden plates to create this simplistic beauty.

For something exotic, the old town of Ban Singh Tha is a commercial district since the ancient times in which the villagers have simple and peaceful lifestyles. You can see houses that have the combination of Chinese and European arts with old houses on the two sides of the road. Apart from that, you will also see various highlighted buildings in many places around here and you can use the tram to appreciate all these beautiful sceneries.

The City Pillar Shrine is another place that you should visit. It has a Chinese architectural style with grand and unique auras. Here you must also try the pickled fish and Lod Chong here as they are pretty famous at Yasothon!

you can take the motorcycle taxis around the bus terminal or other places. There are taxis as well, but they will most likely try to rip you off, so try to negotiate as much as you can.
