Yala – The Southern Most Destination of Thailand

In the south of Thailand, there are plenty of things you can do there as there are so many provinces which offer a lot of attractions for your vacation. It is almost impossible to enjoy the most of Thailand by not visiting the provinces in the south. There are beaches, nature, mountains, and more waiting for you down there that you should really go and visit. One of the most important provinces out there in Thailand in terms of beauty is known as the province of Yala.

 

Yala is located in the southernmost part of Thailand and it is also mentioned in the province?s motto. While most of the provinces in the south are close to the sea or ocean, Yala does not. However, it is undeniably beautiful and many tourists do not aware of the existent of this beauty. In fact, it is the province with one of the most beautiful city structures in the entire world, a 23rd place to be specific. Other provinces have not received this kind of award which means that Yala is the only province in Thailand that has such recognition on the world stage. Moreover, there are 400 roads that connect with each other like spider webs which are on top of each other in three levels. This is the characteristic that shows how the province of Yala organized their space in a very organized and neat fashion.

To get to Yala

There are four options you can choose to get to this province. The first option is to take a plane here, but there is no direct flight to this province. You need to take a plane to Hat Yai first, then you can take a taxi, a bus, or a van to Yala. Next option is by taking a train and there are various schedules of the train leaving from Bangkok, including express and normal trains. The third option is by taking a bus from Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal which takes around 14 hours with a distance of about 1080 kilometers. If you cannot sit on a train that long, driving a car here by yourself is the most convenient option out of all methods mentioned above.

You can literally see the sea of mists that are very beautiful. It is one of the places in Thailand where you can see this kind of beauty. It really shows that the southern region can have the sea of mists of their own too. You will be looking at the views of the mountains, forests, and the mist itself in a full 360 degrees view. If you are looking to stay close to nature, you can set up a tent here to sleep with the peaceful nature. At night, you will be able to see the stars in a milky way as well! In addition, you can come here all year to experience all of this!

Next place which is highly recommended if you are visiting Thailand and the place is called Wat Phuttathiwat. This temple contains one of the most beautiful Mahathat Chedis in Thailand and the biggest one in the southern region with the height of 39.9 meters as well. Additionally, you can see many special Buddha statues, including a holy golden Buddha statue that is the biggest in Thailand with a height of 14.29 meters and 40 tons in weight.

Piyamit Tunnel

If you are the one for tunnel or want to explore a cave in Thailand, Yala can provide you with that. Piyamit Tunnel is a historic site that used to be a cave where a group of communist in the past built the cave to use as a shelter and a supply storage. It was built in the year 1977. Inside of the cave, there are nine paths that are connected with each other and many different rooms. The air inside of the cave is cool and fresh. The distance inside the cave itself is about one kilometer which is quite amazing. There is also a museum that showcases the tools that the communists used at the time. On the exterior of the cave, there are picture showcases and historical stories for your indulgement.

It must be the first recommended event here. It is an event that countries in the ASEAN group such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia bring their dove to compete with their voices. The competition breaks into three categories; high voice, medium voice, and low voice. There are more than 2,000 birds competing each year in which each of the bird is worth between 100,000 baht to four million baht. You can watch the competition around the beginning of March and you are invited!

Meun Boop Pha Garden

Normally, if you want to see winter flowers in Thailand, you need to go the northern region, but there is also a display of winter flowers here in this province. Meun Boop Pha Garden is a source of species of gorgeous flowers with a rotation of flowers on display all year long.

It is a garden that surrounded by mountains and situated about 800 meters above ground. The air here is refreshing, and you can stay a night here as well.

This is also the province that has the biggest post box in Thailand and the world! It is about 9 meters in height and it is usable on daily basis! It is one of the highlight in the province that make many tourists want to come here and take a picture.

 

For a souvenir

You can buy a kris which is a knife originated 200 to 300 years ago and Yala is famous for making this kind of knife. It is both a weapon and a specific branch of art. The knife is highly detailed and very beautiful to look at.

To get around

It is pretty difficult to find a transportation here and it is recommended to have a car to get around.

There are many budget hotels around the province in which the price range from 300 to 1000 baht per night. Remember to be very cautious of any situation that might occur in Yala as it is, to some certain extent, risky to travel here. Safe travel!
