Saraburi – A Town with Significant Importance of Thailand in the Ancient Times

Provinces of Thailand has their own story to tell and Saraburi surely has a lot of them to offer to the tourists. It is one of the provinces that came a long way since the ancient period and you can really tell from the architecture of the province that hints a lot about the attractions that you may find here.

General Information about Saraburi, Thailand

Saraburi is a city that established itself in the year 1549 during the reign of King Maha Chakkraphat of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. So, it is safe to assume that the province has passed the Ayutthaya era. However, Saraburi has been through many battles and wars since their establishment of the city.

The fun fact about the name of the province is that the actual location of the province is next to a swamp called Bueng Nong Ngong, so the province obtained the inspiration for the name from there as Sa means a swamp and Buri means a town.

To get to this province

There are four ways you can choose to get here. The first is to drive your own car here or take a taxi. The second way is to take a bus from the Northern Bus Terminal from Bangkok. You can choose to take a minibus from Mo Chit Bus Terminal which may be cheaper and faster. Lastly, there are daily trains from Hua Lamphong Station in Bangkok you can take to Saraburi which will take you around two to two and a half hours for the trip. Enjoy the ride!

Saraburi has so many famous places and I find it so difficult to put all of them here. So, I have decided to recognize the most extraordinary ones for your pleasure instead! It took some works to select each of these places, but you will surely know how awesome they all are once you have the chance to visit them!

Wat Phra Phutthabat

The first most famous place in Saraburi is Wat Phra Phutthabat. This temple was built in the year 1624 and it is an important and famous temple in all of Saraburi. The special thing that this temple has is the Buddha?s footprint which is one of the oldest in Thailand! The footprint located inside Phra Montop which is a structure that has a square shape with beautiful decorations, especially the door. The door is one of the top artistic works that uses pearl of Thailand!

The stairs also have a serpent with five heads and golden body for the entirety of it which leads to Phra Montop. Inside of the temple, you can pay respect to many holy things. There is even a Phra Phutthabat National Museum that collects ancient artifacts including arts and others.

Sunflowers Festival

Saraburi is an important source of sunflowers in Thailand with more than 20 square kilometers of area with sunflowers. On November to December of every year, there is an annual festival called the Blooming Sunflower Festival and the two sides of the road will fill with yellow from the sunflowers. Many tourists usually come here to take pictures of the beautiful sunflowers in this festival and you can even buy processed products from sunflowers such as dried sunflower seeds, sunflower cookies, sunflower honey, and etc.

Jed Sao Noi Waterfall

This is a short waterfall with seven levels that has seven pools connect with each other and you can play in the water as well. Each of the level is about two to five meters of height and the most beautiful level is level four. During the period of November to April, the water is clear and safe without much disturbance and the atmosphere is also quite nice too.

The most famous souvenir in Saraburi is Curry Puff with crispy texture filled with a lot of fillings. The more you bite into it, the more flavors you are going to taste. There are salty and sweet flavors for your choosing, but the highly recommended one is the chicken curry flavor which smells awesome!

 

Local Tells

Unique places in each province of Thailand has some kind of a charm to it which is obviously differ from each other. For Saraburi, it is mostly consisting of cultural and natural attractions which are known to the locals since the ancient times. It is time for you to begin your experience on these attractions!

Wat Pa Sawang Boon

The first recommended place by the local on this list is known as Wat Pa Sawang Boon which is a very peaceful temple in Saraburi. The highlight of this place is Phra Maha Chedi with more than 500 Chedis in one structure. To give you a better picture, there is a giant Chedi in the middle surrounded by other 500 Chedis with nine levels in all direction. This Chedi has a diameter of more than 50 meters and it is beautifully unique than any other Chedi in Thailand. It is also one of the most beautiful Chedi in Thailand! The material of the Chedi is concrete which covered by gold color and each of them has a Buddha relic inside. Inside the giant Chedi, there is a smaller Chedi made out of concrete which is pretty magnificent. Ruby glass is the decoration for the wall of this Chedi.

Next place on the list is called Jedkod-Pongkonsao Natural Study and Eco Center. It is the place where you can learn all about the ecosystem of nature, including rainforest, dry evergreen forest, mixed forest, and grass plain. There are many activities you can choose to participate such as sleeping inside a tent, camping, and picnic near a water reservoir. The views consist of trees and mountains with peaceful and beautiful nature. You will also get to see some cute rabbits in which the center raises them naturally. You can choose to rest at the center, but you have to contact them in advance. The center has three main paths where you can choose to observe the wildlife, butterflies, and various species of plants.

Other than that, you can visit some waterfalls here, but the most spectacular one is Krok E Dok Waterfall. It is a waterfall with eight levels, but you can only get up to the seventh level and you also require passing through a forest to get there. The most beautiful period has to be between June and September in which the water is quite a lot and the nature is fill with green, flowers, butterflies wild mushroom including, cookeina speciosa mushroom

Big Tae Garden

To end this list, this is the place I find most suitable for the end of this famous places trip. It is one of the places that plant the most Chrysanthemum in Thailand and you can observe various colors of the plant such as white, yellow, purple, and pink. There are also various species of this plant growing inside a white house in the middle of the nature on an area of more than 160,000 square meters in which you can visit the place at any time in a year!

Other Interesting Information of Saraburi, Thailand

The motto for this province is ?Phra Phutthabat, Pa Sak Cholasit Dam, The Foundation of Industrial Works, Great Agriculture and Tourist Attraction, The One and Only Curry Puff and Good Milk, Tak Baht Dok Mai Ngam Festival, Golden Fields of Sunflowers, and A Famous Suburban City?. To get around the place, you can take the tuktuks or motorcycle taxis around the town. If you want a place to stay, there are plenty of mid-range hotels around which might costs you around 500 baht or more per night per room. Have a great trip at Saraburi!
